Does Hair Grow Back From The Roots?

Hair loss can occur for many reasons including genetic factors, hormonal changes, stress and trauma, and nutrition and diet. It can also be a side effect of medication such as steroids, medication for diabetes and blood pressure, and certain chemotherapies.

Your hair actually grows from small pockets in your skin known as follicles and each strand of hair grows in three stages:

Anagen: this is the active growth that lasts between two and eight years

Catagen: this is the transition phase when hair stops growing and lasts for four to six weeks

Telogen: this testing phase occurs when the hair falls out which lasts two to three months

How long does it take?

When you’re trying to grow your hair back there are many factors that can affect the rate of hair growth, and how long it takes for it to grow back depends on the underlying cause. See some examples below:

Alopecia

This autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the hair follicles resulting in small bald patches on the scalp. Hair can start to grow back at any time but it is unpredictable.

Chemotherapy

Hair will normally start to regrow on its own two to three weeks after chemotherapy has ended. After around a month hair will resume its growth pattern at a normal rate of 15cm per year.

Pattern hair loss

Some follicles stop producing hair as you get older and is referred to as hereditary hair loss or pattern hair loss. This type of hair loss is typically permanent meaning that hair will not grow back, but may be slowed down with oral or topical treatments.

Stress

Excessive levels of stress can cause hair loss and eliminating this stress is the best way to ensure that your hair will grow back. Depending on the circumstances this could take a few months.

Telogen effluvium

When a large number of hair follicles enter the resting phase at the same time but the next growth stage doesn’t start, this is known as telogen effluvium. It's often triggered by a medical event and causes hair to fall out and stops new hair growth. As you recover your hair may start to grow back after six months.

Can dead hair follicles grow back?

A dead hair follicle can’t grow hair as the lack of blood circulation worsens and quickens hair loss. However it is possible to revive dead hair follicles in certain cases if the follicles are at the initial stage of damage, and the growth phase can return. If the hair follicles have been dormant for a long time there’s only a rare chance that they’ll grow back.
