How To Look After Your New Hair

After leaving the salon, it's essential to wait for 24-48 hours before washing your hair or resuming any strenuous activities that can cause you to sweat.

During this time, it's crucial to refrain from the following:

Gym activities  *  Swimming  *  Saunas/steam rooms  *  Heavy rain  *  Disco dancing/clubbing

It takes up to 48 hours for the hair system to properly bond to your skin.  Avoid any fiddling, readjusting, or lifting of the system during this time.

Once the waiting period is over, you can resume normal activities including showering and swimming, and enjoy your new hair. Adhering to these guidelines will ensure that your hair system remains securely attached and intact.

Washing Your Hair System

To ensure the longevity of your hair system, it's recommended that you wash your hair no more than once a week.  Frequent washing can break down the water-soluble bond, causing the system to lift off quicker.

When washing your hair system, it's crucial to use lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing. Instead, use a stroking motion from front to back. It's also recommended to use a sulphate-free, deeply moisturising shampoo such as NAK Hydrate or NAK Nourish Shampoo as the system does not retain natural oils from the scalp.

After applying conditioner such as NAK Hydrate or NAK Nourish Conditioner , comb it through with a vent brush, then rinse thoroughly. For additional conditioning, you can use a weekly treatment or apply one every time you wash your system. Once rinsed, blot dry and apply a small amount of oil, such as Alfaparf Smoothing Oil to maintain the health and shine of your hair system.

Styling Your Hair System

After applying oil to your hair system, use a vent brush to comb through the hair gently, taking care not to exert too much force and risk tearing the system. Be sure to comb through any tangles thoroughly.

You can then opt to dry your hair using a hairdryer on medium heat or allow it to dry naturally.

For optimal results, it's recommended to use a hairdryer to shape the hair into place. While straightening irons can be used, it's not advisable, as they can dry out the hair, reducing the lifespan of your hair system.

At Cochrane & Co Hair Replacement in London, our stylists and hair loss experts will be happy to guide you and give advice on the best way to style your hair replacement system.

Which Products Should You Use?

We offer a full range of products from specialist hair system products such as bonds, adhesives and scalp protectors as well as sulphate-free shampoos, conditioners, serums, oils, mists and styling products.

When it comes to styling your hair system, oils are a popular choice because they can be easily brushed out and don't place too much stress on the hair. However, if you prefer to use other styling products, there are several options available.

Lightweight gel, hairspray, serum, oil, pomade, and lightweight paste are all suitable for use with your hair system. It's important to note that whilst these products won't make your hair system greasy, using too much of them can cause build-up and potentially reduce the lifespan of your system.

To refresh your hair in the morning, you can spritz it with water and style it back into place. It's not necessary to wash your hair system every day, as this can cause unnecessary wear and tear. Stick to using styling products in moderation and your hair system will look great for longer.

How To Maintain Your Hair Replacement

After 2-6 weeks, the bond underneath your hair system will begin to break down, causing it to become looser and stickier. When this happens, it's time for a refit service. During this service, we will remove the hair system, clean and treat it, clean your scalp, trim any hairs that have grown underneath, shape your natural hair to match the system, and then reapply the system.

Once the system is reapplied, it's essential to wait for 24-48 hours before resuming your normal activities to ensure the bond is fully established.

With proper care, your hair system should last approximately 3-4 months before it starts to thin out naturally. This is normal and not a cause for concern; it simply means that the system has reached the end of its lifespan. If you need a new one, simply call our salon.

How To Fix A Hair System Lift

To ensure your hair system looks great, you may need to perform some touch-ups at home if it lifts a little bit in places, especially at the front hairline. This is common as everyone's scalp is different, and some skin is more oily than others.

To do this at home, you will need some simple tools such as coffee sticks, sectioning clips, a hairdryer, and ghost bond.  First, lift the hair system slightly where you feel a lift, carefully section the hair system back and secure with hair clips. Apply a small amount of bond onto a coffee stick (a little goes along way). Then apply the bond directly to the system. Allow to dry until it goes clear or to speed things up, dry with cold air from the hair dryer for approximately 15 seconds until clear. After that, remove the clips and stick it down. Then leave it alone for 24-48 hours to fully set.

It's important not to wash your hair during this time or do anything strenuous like going to the gym, clubbing or swimming. Your stylist will go over how to perform these touch-ups on the day of your appointment.

Mens' Hair System Aftercare - FAQs

Do I have to shave my head to wear a hair replacement system?

We will shave the part of the head where the hair replacement system is added.  We try to work with your natural hair so we can blend the hair replacement around your existing hair for a natural look.

Can I meet someone who has a men's hair replacement system?

Yes indeed. There is no problem at all about that, just give us a call and we can arrange that to happen.  A lot of our guys are very proud of their hair systems and there is a sort of brotherhood among people who wear the systems and the people who fit them, and that works out quite well, you’d be surprised.

How short can my hair system be?

As a guide, the shortest style length we can achieve for a natural look is a number 4 or 5 clipper cut length.

How often should I adjust my hair system?

We advise that our clients adjust their hair systems every 2-4 weeks and properly cleanse the scalp. If you’re more active, you might want to do this more regularly. You are welcome to pop into the salon for a refit service or our technicians can show you how to do it yourself.

Will my hair system match my natural hair colour?

Absolutely!  As experienced hairdressers, we can precisely match your hair system to your natural hair colour. We will colour the system and also cut and style it to ensure it looks natural and realistic.

Can you perm my hair system?

Yes, we can cut, colour, perm and style your hair to precisely the look you desire.  We also are experts in the Calligraphy Cut which is a special way of cutting curly hair to ensure it sits beautifully.  Cutting and styling curly hair is an art which we have perfected at Hair Replacement London.

Will my hair replacement system colour fade?

Mostly no, unless you’re in excessive sun or if you use a shampoo with salt in it. We recommend a sulfate-free shampoo to prolong the health of your new hair.

Can I style my hair replacement differently?

You can style your hair in any way you like. We usually cut your new hair on a bisection, which means you can put a parting on the left hand side, the center or the right hand side. You can wear it back, you can wear it forward. It depends on your style, but we like to give you versatility in your hairstyles, so you can adapt it.

What colours are available for hair systems?

Our Cochrane & Co colour and style experts will expertly colour match your hair system to your own hair colour. We have a wide range of colours available and can always tailor-make a unique colour for your needs. We can also confidently cover greys.

Can I wash my hair system after I leave the salon?

You’ll need to wait 48 hours before washing your hair replacement system or getting it wet. This includes any strenuous exercise that makes you sweat. After 48 hours, you can continue life as normal and resume all these activities.

Can I blow dry my hair system?

Yes. You can gently blow dry your hair system on cool or medium heat. Hair dryers work well for styling your hair.

Can I straighten my hair system?

Hair straighteners can knacker the hair over time, reducing the hair system's lifespan. While you can use a straightening iron, it’s best to avoid them if possible to maintain the quality and health of the hair.
