Hair Replacement Cost in London: Hair System Prices

At Cochrane & Co in London, the cost of non-surgical hair replacement for men depends on the hair system base you choose – standard polyskin, lace or combination – and whether we supply, cut, fit and style it. A Refit & Style is £199, and first-timers start with a £25 consultation that is credited if you go ahead with a new system.

Written with Paul Cochrane, salon owner and hair system specialist at Cochrane & Co, a men’s hair system salon founded in London in 1996 whose team of 4 hair system experts has fitted over 10,000 hair systems.

Hair replacement here means a hair system: real human hair on an ultra-thin polyskin or lace base, attached to the scalp with a hypo-allergenic bond or tape, then cut and coloured to blend with your own hair. It is non-surgical, non-invasive, drug free and non-medical. It is not a hair transplant, so the cost works differently: a fitted system, then regular maintenance and replacement.

How much does hair replacement cost in London?

A new men’s hair system supplied, cut, fitted and styled at our Lamb’s Conduit Street salon is priced by base type: standard polyskin is our entry point, lace sits above it and combination is the top of our standard range. You can also buy the system only, or bring your own system to be fitted. Current prices for every option are listed on our hair replacement prices page; the services work like this:

What is included in the price of a new hair system?

The price of a new fitted system covers the hair system itself plus cutting it in, fitting it to your scalp and styling it with your natural hair, so you walk out with the finished look. Our Standard systems are 6 inches long and are made from high-grade human hair, mainly ethically sourced Indian hair.

Before your first fitting you have a 30-minute consultation with one of our hair system experts, in the salon or online. We assess your hair loss, talk through your lifestyle and the look you want, and show you the different base types. If you are not a suitable candidate for a hair system, we will tell you. The £25 consultation fee comes back to you as a credit if you go ahead with a new system.

What makes one hair system cost more than another?

The base material is the main difference between our three standard price points; custom specifications such as density, knotting and curl move a system into made-to-order pricing. Each choice balances realism, durability, comfort and budget.

  • Standard polyskin: a thin skin base that combines durability with comfort, available as Thin Skin, Mirage or a thicker Skin with a scalloped front.
  • Lace: our most breathable base, attached with tape rather than bond.
  • Combination: a polyskin bonded base with lace, giving ventilation while staying bonded for longevity.
  • Custom (price on application): a bespoke system built to your specification – base material, thickness, density, knotting and curl. Custom systems take 3 months to produce.

Our guide to choosing a hair system compares each base side by side.

What does hair replacement cost over a year?

The ongoing cost depends on how often you replace your system and how often you come in for maintenance. Hair systems are not permanent: sweat, exercise and how you look after your hair all affect how long each one lasts.

A typical routine with us looks like this:

  1. New hair system supply and fitting every 3-6 months.
  2. Hair System Refit & Style every 12 weeks – removal, cleaning, conditioning, refit, and a cut and style of your natural hair.
  3. Hair System Haircut every 6-8 weeks to keep the blend with your own hair sharp.

Many men also learn to remove and reapply their system themselves between visits, and we give you the know-how and tools to do this, which can reduce how many salon refits you need. For worked examples of yearly costs, see our article on what a toupee costs and what you get for your money.

Why is a hair system priced differently from a hair transplant?

A hair system is a non-surgical, non-invasive and non-medical option, so you pay for a product and a salon service rather than a procedure. There is no surgery and no recovery time, and the cost is spread over time instead of paid in one go.

Because a system is cut, coloured and restyled by hairdressers, you can change your look, add colour or have it permed. You also keep control of the spend: we don’t lock clients into contracts, so you book what you need.

Questions men ask about hair replacement cost

How much does a hair system cost?

The price depends on the base: standard polyskin systems cost least, then lace, then combination, and custom made-to-order systems are quoted after a consultation. Our prices page lists the current price of each system fitted or supply only.

How much is a hair system refit?

A Refit & Style costs £199 and takes 2 hours. It includes removing the system, cleaning, conditioning, refitting, and a cut and style of your natural hair.

Can I bring my own hair system?

Yes. We can usually fit most systems made of natural hair, including PU membrane, tape and lace systems. Our Own Hair System Cut, Fit & Style takes 2 hours.

Why do you charge for a consultation?

A consultation is a detailed 30-minute appointment where we explore the best options for you. It costs £25, and we give you the £25 back as a credit if you go ahead with a new hair system.

Do you take clients from other salons?

Yes. Whether you already wear a system or are starting for the first time, we can refit and style an existing system or supply a new one, and our hair replacement services page explains what each visit involves.

Is a hair system the same as a hair transplant?

No. A hair system is not a hair transplant and involves no surgery. It is a non-invasive, drug-free and non-medical way to have a full head of hair again.
