Non-surgical hair replacement systems at Cochrane & Co in London are thin polyskin, lace or combination bases with real human hair, bonded or taped where your hair has thinned, then cut and styled into your own hair. There is no surgery, no medication and no recovery time. A new system supplied, cut, fitted and styled starts at £699.
A non-surgical hair replacement system is a fine base made of polyskin (a polyurethane membrane), lace or both, with human hair woven into it. We shave the thinning area, fix the base to the scalp with a hypo-allergenic bond or tape, then cut and blend the hair into the natural hair on the back and sides so it looks like your own.
It is not a hair transplant and it is not a cure for hair loss. Our systems are non-invasive, drug free and non-medical, and you can take them off again whenever you choose.
Who are non-surgical hair systems for?
They are for men with male pattern baldness who have lost hair on top of the head but still have their own hair on the back and sides, and who want a full head of hair again. Most of our clients are aged between 30 and 60. Some want to look and feel younger; others feel their hair loss is holding them back and want their confidence back. We also fit men who have already had transplant surgery.
If you are not a suitable candidate, we will tell you at your consultation. We give honest advice and we don’t lock clients into contracts.

You can choose from six standard Cochrane & Co designs or a custom system made to order. Standard systems have 6-inch hair, which we then cut to the style you want.

How does non-surgical hair replacement work at our London salon?
It starts with a 30-minute consultation and ends with you leaving the salon with a full head of hair that has been cut and styled for you. The steps are:
- Consultation (£25): 30 minutes with one of our hair system experts, in the salon or online. We look at your hair loss, your lifestyle and the look you want, and show you the different bases. If you go ahead with a new hair system, the £25 is credited back to you.
- Choosing your system: a standard design, or a custom system made to your specification.
- Fitting, cutting and styling: we shave the thinning area, fit the system securely, then cut and style it into your natural hair.
- Upkeep: a hair system haircut every 6-8 weeks, a Refit & Style every 12 weeks (£199, 2 hours: removal, cleaning, conditioning, refit, cut and style of your natural hair) and a new system every 3-6 months.
Between visits we give you aftercare instructions and phone and online support, and we can show you how to remove and refit the system yourself.
How is a hair system different from a hair transplant?
A hair system needs no surgery and gives you a full head of hair on the day it is fitted, while a transplant is surgery and takes months to show results.
- Hair system: non-surgical, drug free, no recovery time, total coverage, and commitment free if you change your mind.
- Hair transplant: surgery required, months to see results, typically £8,000-£20,000, and it relies on donor hair from elsewhere on your head.

Non-surgical hair replacement FAQs
Can I shower, swim and exercise with a non-surgical hair system?
Yes. Once fitted, the system stays in place while you shower, swim, exercise, work and sleep. Chlorine breaks down the bond and fades the colour more quickly, so if you swim regularly we recommend wearing two swimming hats.
How long does a hair system last?
Most clients have a new system every 3-6 months. How long yours lasts depends on how much you sweat, how often you exercise and how you look after it.
Will people know I am wearing a hair system?
Not unless you tell them. We use human hair, colour-match it and cut and style the system to your face shape and the natural hair on your back and sides, so it looks like your own hair.
Can you do short or long styles with a hair system?
Yes. Our standard systems come with 6-inch hair, which we cut to the length and style you want. A custom system can also be ordered with your choice of density and curl, and we can perm a system for a curlier or wavier look.
Can you fit a hair system I bought somewhere else?
Yes. We can usually fit most natural hair systems, including PU membrane, tape and lace systems. Our Own Hair System Cut, Fit & Style is £349 and takes 2 hours.
Is the hair real?
Yes. We use human hair, mainly Indian hair ethically sourced from temples where people donate their hair. Grey hair is not always 100% human.
